Hmmmmm, not too sure about squirrels.... While they can be pretty tricky at times, this sounds more like (maybe) a rat? Have you, or your neighbors had any problems with rats?

I think you should check around a bit, make sure your target is what you think it is. You go about squirrels and rats completely differently.

Read through my rat page and see if you recognize any "happenings."
