The advantage of using a trap in your attic, if you can, is that you'll be catching (supposedly) the invaders only. Rather than many "innocent bystanders" in the neighborhood, if you trap outside. Probably keep you pretty busy, too lol. So I usually recommend starting in the attic. Besides, you won't have any pesky neighbors to bother with.
Try keeping the baited trap CLOSED with some chum on the OUTSIDE of the trap. When they take that chum, wait a day and reset the trap. Sometimes I don't even bait the trap, the animals are curious, they go in to LOOK! In other words, you gotta use your noggin! Go thru my squirrel pages for even more hints.
Peanut butter works fine for me, it's just about the only thing I use.
