Beth, he just wants to get OUT. Leave a window open (in the daytime) in the basement. DO NOT leave water, you want him to go outside, not get comfy inside. He would have to be pretty desperate to chew through pipes.

When you get home tonight, CLOSE the window, but leave a little piece of peanut butter bread (NOT MUCH) out overnight to see if he's still inside. If so, repeat the process the next day. Leave the lights on down there 24/7 until you're SURE he's gone. You can safely go down there, he would be afraid of you and hide until you're gone. He would NOT "attack" you, this is a squirrel, not a bear!

Then search for his avenue inside. If you have an attic fan, check that (from the inside) to see if he's come through that.

Let me know how you make out!

---John
