Squirrels are "boom and bust" animals, meaning some years are worse (or better) than others.
Shooting these little devils may seem like fun, I see that. But they are clever, and can easily become wary of you with a gun, unless you do a good job of hiding it. And don't let your neighbors discover you're doing that, they can make big trouble for you! Hell, many won't even like the fact that you're just trapping them. Be careful!
Years ago, I used to hunt squirrels in the woods. A very challenging target. As soon as they see a gun (they're that cunning) they disappear around the other side of the tree.
So be careful with the gun and AND your neighbors!
