Yeah, Fred, it happens lots... Not necessarily on the bumpers you speak of, but they do get under hood and can do LOADS of damage there, mostly to wiring.
The oak trees are an attractant, to be sure, but it's probably just a few individuals that are doing this. You might be able to trap those, leave some of the damaged items around the areas where the squirrels come from, with traps hidden from the public eye, and you're sure to catch the offenders and less of the innocent bystanders. DON'T let them go, innocent or not, put each and every one down, so he never comes back. Make sure you let as few people as possible know what you are doing, many people don't understand the problem, they LIKE squirrels, even though the difference between rats and squirrels is that cute fuzzy tail...
Use the Hava-Hart 1040's not the 1030's - the 1040's catch better, they're longer.
Go thru my squirrel pages (links above)for more ideas, many will aply in your case. This WILL be somewhat labor intensive. And, no, poisons are not to be used.
