Hi! We have open soffits on the house, and have had flying squirrels in the attic.

I am planning on covering the soffits and any other openings with hardware cloth, installing one-way exits at the active entry points, and putting two traps inside the attic to catch the ones that don't make it outside.

Once I've gotten all of the squirrels out of the attic, I'm covering the hardware cloth with vinyl soffit material to give it a finished look.

I ordered 1/2" 19 gauge hardware cloth, but they sent 1/4" 23 gauge instead.

Since I was planning to work on it this weekend, I don't have time to re-order the 1/2" one.

So, can I use the 1/4" hardware cloth? Is it thick enough to stop the squirrels from chewing through?

Thanks!
