Ben, you say you have a 'ground' squirrel and you're in Chicago? If so, that wouldn't be a ground squirrel, you don't have them there! You probably have a chipmunk or possibly a flying squirrel. Do you have a picture? If so, just send it to my email. let me see it.

Live trap would be best, keep it going until you have them all. AND CLOSE THAT WINDOW! Or if you leave it open, screen it off so nothing gets in. And yes, it's possible he was in there to start with.
