Well, it could be almost any small animal. Squirrels, chipmunks, flying squirrels... Depends on where you live and what you have around you. Whatever it is is going to stay out of your way if he possibly can.
If you're sure it's small, probably the best and quickest way might be to use glueboards. Yeah, it sounds cruel, but do you want to catch him or what?
Live trapping something, especially when you're not sure what it could be could cause problems. Plus, it's probably going to take longer using a live trap. And don't use a snap trap unless you know EXACTLY what it is.
Make sure you have a chimney cap on your chimney and walk around your house and check for a way they might be getting in. Also make sure your attached garage (if you have one) is sealed tight when it's closed - no light coming through the door.
