Mystery solved! My roofing and siding guy came by to have a look and give me an estimate and though there is damage in the spot where I thought there was a hole, there was no actual hole into the house. That's why I didn't hear any noises. I lucked out this time! He screwed in a piece of sheet metal as a temporary fix till he he comes back tomorrow to do the complete repair. There are also some other shakes that are frayed on the edges and I'm having those replaced as well.
As for the "exterminator" who came to inspect your house, you are a much better person than I. There is no way I could possibly refrain from calling him out on not checking the crawl space or telling him that I was an actual, real, and honest exterminator. So a tip of the hat to you, sir.
As always, John, thanks ever so much for your sage counsel and good luck on your move!
