Groundhogs are dumb and they're shy. Two things that make them tough to trap. Do this: Put the trap close to the hole. Sometimes you have to use a couple of 2x8 to "channel" them into the trap.

But first wire the trap OPEN. Then chum the trap with, say, some cabbage or something, and when he starts taking it, enable the trap.

What to do with it? Probably the easiest is to dunk the trap in water for a few minutes... Although that's not "proper" in Mass, so don't let anyone see you do it, if that's the way. I think you're allowed to shoot it, but I think that could be dangerous, so the water is the easiest.
