Try disguising the trap. Put it in (maybe) a cardboard box, one that you set up especially to accommodate the trap, making sure the trap operates correctly. Set up 2,3,4 (or whatever) of these with NO traps inside, like a "shell" game. And do not bait the trap or set out any chum.
