Termites don't attack LIVE wood. And termites ARE up there, just not very many... I have an exterminator friend up your way, he does one or two jobs a year for termites, as opposed to our 4-500 jobs.

What you saw was probably carpenter ants. They won't hurt the tree either. Carpenter ants and trees have a symbiotic relationship - just leave them alone.
