Wow! I can't believe this happened to someone else. I have an old historic home in Mobil, AL nestled around ancient oaks. For the past 3 years or so, we had a huge smell that would knock us down as soon as we entered the foyer of our home. I swear it smelled like pot. At first, especially when the smell started to embarrass the hell out of us with company, I thought someone hid a stash years and years ago by the previous occupants. This was not the case. I looked under, around, and up & down for any signs of marijuana and didnít find a thing. Fast forward to two weeks ago and youíll understand why Iím participating in this forum. I had a floor crew come in to lay down a new tile floor. As they are tearing out the old sub floor, wa-lah, they found termites; southeast subterranean bastards to be specific. I was infested with themÖ thousands. They were exactly where the pot smell had been emanating from all these years. Once the damage was inspected, it was determined that the infestation was new but also had signs of old damage too. Multiple colonies over the years had been in and out of certain layers of my floor. They had been around long enough for them to completely eat through a 22ft 12x12 section of the seal of my house. Conclusion, I donít think that this is a coincidence. I would reconsider if I smoked the stuff but I donít. There has to be a correlation between termites and the smell of pot. My guessÖ maybe they donít emanate odors while alive. However, I wonder what it smells like if they perish in the wood they are eating? Or, did some kind of chemical reaction take place when they started crunching down into my heart-of-pine floors. Anyway, maybe itís not such a far out notion to put these two pesky variables together.
