John, I have a similar problem - the guy who owned my house before us put apparently untreated wooden lampposts directly into the ground (no concrete anchor!) next to the driveway. Today while I was mowing the lawn, I noticed that the post at the end of the driveway (about 25-30' from the house) has a termite tube running up its side. I'm going to replace the lamppost with something less attractive to termites, but in the meantime I have two questions:
1. Should I spray the existing termites before I pull the post?
2. Noticing this activity, how much should I worry with regard to my home? The house is about 40 years old, and there are not now (nor have there ever been) any other signs of termite activity anywhere on our house or property.
PS: Thanks for your carpenter ant page - it certainly assuaged some of my fears earlier this spring when I was seeing frequent "onesies and twosies."
