Actually, I suspect fly larvae. Since you mentioned you have no chimney cap, you might have some kind of animal(s) up there that are causing this. I certainly hope you saved your samples... Put them in a sealed jar and put it away for a week or so and see what develops in there.

No, you wouldn't put the bait in the fireplace, and it wouldn't make it any quicker. If you indeed have termites, you want to give Jim O'Brien a call. He's right where you are and he's the BEST! (Tell him I said "Hello!" Details are on my Good Guys Page, scroll down to find Jim.
