I looked in the jar again. There are actually about a dozen beasties that look like termite workers, and at least two that look like termite soldiers.

I remember that you mentioned somewhere on your site that you can distinguish between termites and ants by putting the jar that contains the specimens on a windowsill.

Maybe it's the heat from the sun that kills the termites (unlike the ants), and not the light? Mine did scurry away from the light when I first found them, but the jar has been sitting on the dining room table since then (where the light is diffuse).

Also, I think there's some humidity in the jar because I scooped up some crumbly cement or dirt with them.

I did call Jim, will call him again on Monday.
