Thanks so much for putting this message board together, it's a great public service. We just purchased a house in Portland, Oregon and discovered subterranean termites in the finished basement while getting an egress window installed. It's very difficult to tell where they're coming from or the extent of the infestation because everything is covered up.
We've gotten opinions from four exterminators, and it seems that subterranean termites are very uncommon here. The first guy just recommended soaking the affected wood with borax. The next guy said they didn't have any experience with them.
The third guy said he'd been studying wood destroying organisms in class and was really excited to finally have a chance to treat then. He kept phoning home to another guy at the company and finally recommended filling the wall void with Termidor foam and trenching and rodding the perimeter. Not thrilled about using the stuff indoors - my wife is pregnant.
The fourth guy seemed a little more experienced and confident, but he said treating the exterior wouldn't be effective because they're coming up from underneath. He recommended drilling the slab all around the basement, to the tune of $3500, with the added wrinkle that the entire basement floor is covered by old vinyl (probable) asbestos tile, so we'd be looking at getting all of the removed at great expense before even starting.
As you can imagine, this process has been a little frustrating. Just looking for some advice, and if possible, a recommendation for someone in the area.
Thanks in advance!
